The Square Body Story: 1973-1987

Third-generation C/Ks were formally known as the Rounded-Line; within the popular lexicon, they came to be known as the Square Body because of their powerful, box-like image.
Having been introduced in 1973, it was really innovative in designing a truck that changed the trend from an entirely utility transporter to an everyday driver. With 15 years of production, it is one of the longest-running model trucks in history, making it a legend to classic truck enthusiasts.
Charting the Journey of a Square Body Icon
- 1973: The new generation is launched. It has a bigger cab, better ride comfort with rubber-bodied mountings and redesigned suspension, and its first factory-option Crew Cab. Early in its history, its name, the Rounded-Line, was acquired based on the fact that it used a wind tunnel to develop curve-shaped, streamlined body lines.
- 1975: The K5 Blazer becomes a full-time 4WD vehicle, and its fully removable convertible top makes it a highly sought-after classic.
- 1981: The most significant facelift to the Square Body has its way. They present a new sleeker front end with new fenders, hood, and grill to facilitate better aerodynamics. There is also modernization in interior design. This is a critical year in parts compatibility.
- 1982: The first Detroit Diesel 6.2L V8 is made available to give the work-oriented trucks a fuel-efficient engine.
- 1987: The last year of the C/K series of pickup trucks. Not to be confused with the new generation which was coming out, the rest of the Square Body models (Blazer, Suburban, Crew Cabs) were re-named the "R/V Series" until they were redesigned, themselves, in 1991.
Drivetrain: The C/K Square Body Chevy Differences
Code | Drivetrain | Payload Class | Primary Use |
---|---|---|---|
C | 2-Wheel Drive (2WD) | C10 (1/2 Ton),
C20 (3/4 Ton), C30 (1 Ton) | Street performance, daily driving, hauling on paved roads. |
K | 4-Wheel Drive (4WD) | K10 (1/2 Ton), K20 (3/4 Ton), K30 (1 Ton) | Off-road, heavy-duty work, all-weather capability. |
R/V | 2WD/4WD (1987-1991) | - | Post-1987 designation for Blazers, Suburbans & Crew Cabs. |

Your Square Body Project Restoration Starts Here
Project 1: Conquering Common Rust
Key Rust-Prone Areas:
- Cab Corners: The triangular area on the cab behind the doors, notorious for trapping moisture.
- Rocker Panels: The long panels located beneath the doors, susceptible to corrosion from both the inside and outside.
- Wheel Arches: Especially the rear arches, which collect mud, salt, and water.
- Cab Floor Pans: Moisture under the carpet can lead to corrosion, especially in the driver and passenger footwells.
- Lower Door Skins: Internal drain holes can clog, causing water to pool and rust the door from the inside out.
Project 2: Interior Refresh: Reclaim Your Cabin
Dashboard Pad / Cap: The visual centerpiece of the cab, this solves the common problem of cracking from sun exposure.
Molded Carpet Kit: Replacing a dirty, worn carpet instantly makes the entire cab feel new again.
Door Panels: Restore the function and appearance of your doors by replacing warped or broken panels.
Seat Covers & Foam: Fix sagging seats and bring back new-truck support and comfort.
Headliner: A clean, new headliner corrects the common issue of sagging or deteriorating original fabric.
Project 3: Solving the Gremlins - A Complete Electrical Overhaul
Common Electrical Failures:
- Wiring Harness Degradation: Over time, wire insulation becomes brittle and cracks, while the copper wire itself develops increased resistance, leading to poor performance or short circuits. Unprofessional wiring modifications (“hackery”) by previous owners only make matters worse.
- Poor Grounds: Corroded or loose grounding points are a common source of bizarre and intermittent electrical problems.
- Fuel System Electronics: For later TBI (Throttle Body Injection) models, the electric fuel pump and its related circuitry are another common point of failure that can cause starting or running issues.
Project 4: Modern Brake Conversion
Key Upgrade Components:
- Front Disc Brake Conversion Kit: The #1 safety upgrade for most Square Body trucks, providing immense stopping power.
- Rear Disc Brake Conversion Kit: Further enhances braking performance and stability, especially for trucks with high horsepower or heavy hauling duties.
- Master Cylinder & Power Booster: Provides the necessary hydraulic pressure for a disc brake system, ensuring a firm, responsive pedal feel.
- Proportioning Valve: Correctly balances brake pressure between the front and rear wheels to prevent lock-up and ensure a safe, controlled stop.

1. Preliminary Work
When we receive the sample you give to us, the primary job is to measure material shrinkage parameters, part rotation and tip positions, and what standard components are going to be used.
2. 3D Drawing
3D Drawing makes it substantially easier to achieve standardization and synchronization across design and manufacturing, resulting in fewer errors, speeding up delivery, and obtaining more reliable results.
3. Mould Making
Our master technician is experienced in strongmold making. Additionally, we use electrical discharge machining to produce fine details, surface finish work, and intricate cavities and shapes, which help the finished products to very close tolerances.
4. Injection Moulding
Molten resin is injected under high pressure into the cavity of a metal die and then cooled, forming a solid shape. But firstly, we will dry the plastic material to prevent bubbles, which makes the finished product more notable.
5. Chrome Plating
Using chrome plating technology is more reflective, bluer, and specular than other finishes.
The technology of vacuum metalizing & metallic coatings is extremely remarkable in our production.
A chrome surface also resists corrosion, making it suitable for use in harsh environments or where other plating materials would wear away, exposing the substrate metal to corrosion attack.

FAQs:
Regarding parts interchangeability, the short answer is “some parts are, but key components are not.”
- Non-Interchangeable Parts: The primary differences are in the front-end sheet metal. The hood, front fenders, grille, and radiator core support from a 1973-1980 model are not compatible with a 1981-1987 model, and vice versa. It is essential to order these parts according to your truck’s specific model year.
- Generally Interchangeable Parts: The cab shell itself (from the firewall back), doors, bed, and most major chassis components have a high degree of interchangeability across the entire 1973-1987 range. However, smaller mechanical and electrical parts, such as brake lines or wiring harnesses, can vary by year and configuration.
We suggest that buyers should always confirm the exact year of your vehicle before purchasing classic gm square body parts. If you’re ever unsure, contact our technical experts. We’ll help you accurately identify your truck and find the perfect-fitting 73-87 chevy truck parts.
The following projects are widely considered to offer the best “bang for your buck” and are ideal for beginners:
Step 1: Deep Clean & Assessment
This may sound simple, but it is the most important first step. A thorough cleaning of the interior, exterior, and undercarriage will give you a complete picture of the 73-87 Chevy truck’s condition, reveal hidden issues, and prepare you for the work ahead.
Step 2: Interior Refresh
The interior is where you interact most with your vehicle, and improvements here provide the most immediate sense of satisfaction.
You can try a new carpet kit, putting on a set of seat covers, or adding a new dashboard cap. These projects typically require basic hand tools and provide a dramatic visual transformation, making a tired cabin look fresh again.
Step 3: Basic Tune-Up & Maintenance
Getting the truck running healthy is core to the experience.
We suggest replacing the spark plugs, distributor cap, ignition coil, and plug wires. Change the oil, coolant, and all filters. This basic maintenance not only improves the engine’s reliability and efficiency but also helps you become familiar with the engine bay.
Step 4: Lighting & Exterior Detail Upgrades
Upgrading the dim factory headlights to modern LED headlights dramatically improves nighttime visibility and safety while giving the 1973-1987 square body Chevy a sharper look. Additionally, replacing faded or cracked taillight lenses, side markers, and installing new chrome trim or a new bumper are relatively simple projects that significantly enhance the truck’s exterior appearance.
The dream place to store it is a climate-controlled, dry garage. Otherwise, indoor storage in a garage or a barn will be preferable to protect it against the sun, moisture, and temperature changes that catalyze rusting and interior corrosion. Indoors, cover your 73-87 Chevy trucks with a quality but breathable cover and a clean vehicle–not a plastic cover, which will trap moisture.
In case of long-term storage (e.g., over winter), these are the important steps to follow. Make sure that the tank is filled up to 90 percent and that there is an addition of a stabilizer. Replace the oil and filter to eliminate rust-causing pollutants. To avoid getting flat spots in tires, overinflate the tires to 10 PSI or better yet, use jack stands. Keep the battery on a trickle charger or leave the negative cable off. Lastly, in and on the 70s square body Chevy, apply mothballs or rodent repellents to avoid the chewing by pests and nest-making by these critters. These steps will help keep your old school square body Chevy safe and road-ready.
